Hypocracy of an American President

Apparently you and I aren't going to be allowed to purchase large, safe automobiles.
Obama announced today that the federal government is adopting California's toughest-in-the-nation CAFE standards. An "administration official" said:
"It's important to note that all [car] companies will be required to make more efficient and cleaner cars."
By the way, market analysis has shown that people don't want "more efficient, cleaner cars," especially hybrids. Studies have also shown that raising CAFE standards has not lowered our demand for oil, as the Administration says will be the inevitable result of raising the CAFE standard again. In fact, it may raise demand because it makes vehicle operating costs lower.

This announcement is not really a surprise. Remember what president Obama said in Roseburg, Oregon on May 16, 2008, during the campaign?
"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times...That's not leadership. That's not going to happen."

I guess the President isn't going to lead by example:

I have a saying that applies here:
Unreasonable expectations and illogical beliefs always lead to hypocrisy.

Why is it that Statists don't like to submit themselves to the policies they believe are "good for the country" and impose on all of us?
Just remember everything President Obama does is....

I read today that GM was considering selling out to the Federal Government. If it goes anything like how most government operations (except my unit at work...of course) then we will have to buy cars that get worse gas mileage, are less safe and all in all don't drive the way you want to go.
At least there would be some money back in the federal government's pocket...for a week.

In "The Economics of Public Issues" ed. miller, benjamin, north. An article focuses on how the CFE rules didn't meet their goal, in fact since the first round gas economy has been reduced by about 1 mile per gallon. The gist is that light trucks had different standards than cars. The reduced size in cars made hem unsafe so more people started driving light trucks (soon to become SUV). The light truck increased in size making it more dangerous for people not in those vehicles. Highway death tolls increased and polution stayed roughly the same (or more if you do the CO2 dance).

Sheesh, what a world. Never think that we can make the same mistakes and our parents...and yet here we are

I heard a guy on the radio say about the government building cars: "Congratulations! American cars will now still fall apart after 70,000 miles, but now they will take 30 years to build!"

Yeah, I saw that thing about the CAFE stuff. It turns out people drive more when they get better gas mileage.

I did a little research for a post on Facebook (BTW, Theo and Bill and others say you should get on there). The 1995 Honda Civic got 50 mpg. The 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid gets 45! Their best gas-only, the Fit, only gets 33. It is tiny too. My '03 Outback Wagon gets 28! It weighs 1,000 lbs more than the fit, and has almost twice the room. Something screwy is going on here.
